Edge enhancement is an image processing filter that enhances the edge contrast of an image or video. This is done to compensate for the image blurring caused by the lens, optical anti-aliasing filter, etc. and to provide a subjectively sharper image. Noises increase during the sharpening of the image details. In an edge enhancement, a coring function is used to remove noise edges. But the coring function reduces also the image detail edges. Despite of using the coring function, the edge enhancement using the coring function enhances noise edges over the coring level. As the coring level increases, the enhancement of the noise detail decreases and also decreases the enhancement of the image edge detail edge. So we have developed the new algorithm that can enhance the image detail without increasing noises. Our edge enhancement core enhances the image edge and reduces the enhancement of the noise edges depending on the noise level detected by a noise estimator.

In an edge enhancement using the coring function, as the coring level increases, the enhancement of the image edge decreases in under the coring level. And also noise edges over the coring level are still enhanced. So we have developed the new algorithm that can enhance the image detail without increasing noises. Our edge enhancement core enhances the image edge and reduces the enhancement of the noise edges depending on the noise level detected by a noise estimator. Our edge enhancement core uses the noise filter being used in our noise reduction core to filter the noise edges.
